Christi Denton (Composer) is a Portland based sound installation artist who works with found sounds, electronics, and homemade instruments. Her works have been performed throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. Her music is included as part of "Six Seconds Around Me" in the CAM_Casoria Contemporary Art Museum in Italy. She studied at the Centre de Creation Musicale Iannis Xenakis in Paris and at Mills College in Oakland. In 2011, her work was performed in the Electrogals Festival, and her collaboration with Ross was shown in the Time Based Art Festival’s Ten Tiny Dances. Her laser MIDI controller was accepted into the 2012 Guthman Musical Instrument Competition.

Danielle Ross (Choreographer/Director) is a Portland bred and Bay Area trained dancer and choreographer. She is interested in how we perform for one another. Ross holds a BFA in Dance and Performance Studies from UC Berkeley. In 2010, her work Make the Air Thick premiered at Launch Pad Gallery and her installation Home/Body was shown at Appendix Project Space. In 2011, she curated San Francisco’s Fact/SF into Performance Work’s Northwest’s Alembic Series. She has performed at TBA’s Ten Tiny Dances with Composer Christi Denton and with Zoe/Juniper for their 2011 installation at Lincoln Hall. She is currently dancing for Linda Austin, and her latest work To Remember Is To Jump Around There premiered at the Headwaters Theatre in January, 2012. She is also a founding member of FRONT, a Portland run publication dedicated to contemporary dance.

The Lucky Penny welcomes Christi Denton and Danielle Ross, who are in town for the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition at Georgia Tech. We will be presenting an intimate performance and artist talk with them on Thursday, 2/16.

Idea: Threshold

Idea Capital has awarded Lucky Duo, Blake Beckham and Malina Rodriguez, a grant to support the creation of their upcoming performance work, Threshold. Premiering in late summer, the piece is designed for a house constructed out of cardboard, and examines the home as both a sacred and profane space. The Lucky Penny is currently recruiting architects, designers, and artist volunteers. Contact blake@theluckypenny.org for more information.

Lucky Us - We're Launching with The Blow

On Tuesday, June 28 at 8:30 pm, The Lucky Penny kicks off their daring programming with a lecture and performance by New York-based performance artist and musician Khaela Maricich and installation/conceptual artist Melissa Dyne. The duo performs under the moniker The Blow, with Maricich serving as front woman in an act that blurs the edges of pop music, performance art and site-specific theater.

During their Lucky Penny artist talk, The Blow will discuss their current collaborative performance tour, which stops in at the Drunken Unicorn on June 27th. Their lecture takes the shape of a performative presentation addressing the invisible boundary lines of convention and the alluring strangeness of creating a pop icon. They will shed light on the intricacies of their collaborative process, in which Dyne treats each stage show as a live art installation with lighting and sound elements interacting with the acoustics and architecture in each venue, while Maricich charms audiences with the crisp sweetness of her vocals wafting across dance beats.

The lecture will be co-presented by Dashboard Co-Op, and takes place in the Paul Robeson Theater at The Arts Exchange, located at 750 Kalb Street (accessible off Glenwood Avenue, between Moreland and Boulevard). While admission is free, donations to directly support the artists are encouraged.

The Blow performs on June 27 at the Drunken Unicorn (736 Ponce de Leon Avenue) where doors open at 8:30pm and the cover is $10.

Artist Biographies

The Blow

Khaela Maricich is a performing artist and pop musician. Under the name, The Blow, she has released a number of music albums and toured nationally and internationally. Working in music venues as well as art spaces, her performances explore and exploit the conventions of each format. Her recent work interweaves elements of narrative performance art with traditional pop-show dynamics. She has presented at such venues as The Kitchen, Irving Plaza, The Warhol Museum, Henry Fonda Theater, Great American Music Hall, and Wexner Center. She lives and works in New York City. The Blow's live performance is currently being produced in collaboration with artist Melissa Dyne.

Melissa Dyne is a conceptual and installation artist, whose large scale site-specific pieces have been exhibited in museums in the US and abroad. Her installations incorporate the physics of sound, light and spatial phenomena, frequently engaging in conversation with industry as well as spectator. Dyne’s solo exhibition, Glass, was presented at The Museum of Contemporary Craft, in 2008, and her works have been commissioned by the Museo de la Ciudad de Mexico, and performed in festivals in Mexico City, Hong Kong, and the United States. She currently lives in New York.
